38 Minutes 12 Seconds
38 Minutes 13 Seconds will bring together, for the first time, a harrowing archive of audio accounts and text message correspondences from the January 2018 Hawaii false missile alert incident. As the “Doomsday Clock” reaches 100 seconds to midnight, this online exhibition is an effort to humanize the threat of nuclear arms and illustrate the precarity of our current geopolitical moment. We will bring to life the intimate moments of vulnerability and terror that gripped almost two million residents and tourists as they struggled with their final moments. The exhibition will be comprised primarily of audio files and text messages, and will also incorporate personal images and photos submitted by interviewees/participants. All audio files and images will be licensed by their original creators. The exhibition can be launched in November or December of 2021, but ideally it would go live JANUARY 2022 (the four-year anniversary of the event).
Article Proposals:
1: Background of Hawaii alert incident and summary of research process.
2: Discussion of exhibition and research findings.
Disclosure: I am currently working on a nuclear nonproliferation event (August 7) with Mary Jane Jacob, Pedro Alonzo, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which will incorporate some of these audio files. Attached sample files for illustration purposes only.
